Out of Province Inspection: Edmonton Drivers Choose Bruce Stewart Automotive
If you’re bringing a vehicle into Alberta from another province, a certified Out of Province Inspection is a necessary step before registration. Edmonton drivers trust Bruce Stewart Automotive to handle this process with professionalism, transparency, and care.
Why Do You Need an Out of Province Inspection?
Alberta Transportation has specific vehicle safety standards that may differ from those in other provinces. To legally register your vehicle in Alberta and obtain license plates, you’ll need to complete the Out of Province Vehicle Inspection Program (VIP) within 90 days of purchase or arrival.
This inspection is required for:
Vehicles purchased outside Alberta
Restored, rebuilt, or modified vehicles
Vehicles with no previous Alberta registration or documentation
Some exceptions exist based on a vehicle’s history. Our team can quickly determine if your vehicle qualifies for an exemption.

What to Expect During an Out of Province Vehicle Inspection
Our certified technicians conduct a full mechanical and structural inspection that typically takes under two hours. We check all major systems, including:
Fuel and exhaust systems
Electrical and lighting systems
Engine controls and driveline
Brakes, suspension, and steering
Tires, wheels, and wipers
Windshield, mirrors, and glass
We’ll also evaluate the structural integrity of the frame and body, checking for corrosion, signs of major collision damage, or substandard repairs. All parts must meet Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) standards for wear and safety.
Common Reasons Vehicles Fail Inspection
To avoid delays, take care of minor issues before your appointment. These common problems can result in a failed inspection:
Worn-out wiper blades or cracked windshields
Non-functioning lights or signal indicators
Bald tires or worn brake pads
Dashboard warning lights (like the check engine light)
If you’re unsure whether your vehicle is ready, ask us to perform a diagnostic check beforehand.
What Happens If Your Vehicle Fails the Inspection?
If your vehicle doesn’t pass, don’t worry, you’ll have 10 days to complete repairs. Bruce Stewart Automotive can handle all necessary repairs in-house, saving you time and hassle. Once fixed, we’ll re-inspect your vehicle and verify that it meets Alberta’s safety standards.
After your vehicle passes, you’ll have 14 days to complete the registration. If you miss that window, the inspection will need to be redone.
